Shiny Honeycomb [Final]

The Shiny Honeycomb is designed to be a lighting installation that incorporates aluminum trays to reflect the light. Its geometry is based on an exagonal grid which by extrusion creates the honeycomb structure. The size of the installation is not determined by the design, as it can grow to x,y,z direction according to the needs and the material’s availability.This laser cut model is made out of acrylic sheets 3mm thickness.

The development of Mutant Brush into the fabrication phase has involved the production of multiple prototypes, ending in two functional nodes.

The team decided, after all to use the simple triangular node to be the one used for the installation at plaza Santa Ana, and to exhibit the other one as part of the process.

The idea of this project is to use small format machines [like the 900 x 600 laser cutter we used] to create bigger structures using standard pieces. In this case we laser cut the nodes in  MDF 3mm  and used broomsticks [so Halloween!].

Lost in Translation [Final]

Lost in translation 2.0 is the result of the convergence of two former projects, Lost in translation 1.0 and xxx. Its consists in a portable personal canopy to be put over one of the granite benches in the plaza de Santa Ana. The canopy could potentially incorporate various functionalities / devices, like lighting, vaporized water nozzles, sound and/or video…

The canopy in the actual instance that we are trying to fabricate incorporates a folded flexible cardboard skin that uses hair pins in its construction.

Botte Mote [Final]

Botte-mote departed from the implementation of small plastic bottle as a joint [rótula] that was first built with cardboard. Then the team went on exploring the potential of the mechanism, prototyping it in 3mm plywood.

Several applications of the mechanism were developed, combining multiple joints in scissor like devices. One of the possible applications to be presented in the Plaza de Santa Ana will be small tables to accompany the existing benches, that we may use to put our fliers.

Anforme [Final]

Nuestra propuesta nace de la necesidad de sombra en verano, de intimidad, de luz, protección, de la necesidad de interacción entre las personas y del reciclaje en lugares públicos.
Proponemos un tejido formado por la repetición de una pieza, creando tramas y colonizando el lugar de manera an-forme.

El diseño de la pieza surge de las reglas del “nesting” y del concepto de tesela o mosaico. Esta pieza ha sido pensada para ser solapada con otras y para sostener una luz o una botella reciclada.

En el caso concreto de la plaza de Santa Ana, las farolas sostendrán el tejido an-forme. Los transeúntes podrán poner su botella reciclada completando el diseño y la forma final de esta etapa.
En otros espacios públicos, otras formas podrán ser creadas.

This project is very complete, because it expires with practically all the requirements:

  1. A concrete urban place and use (YES)
  2. A recycled material sense of use (YES)
  3. A solid and geometric structure wich does not break up (YES)
  4. A three-dimensional expansion (NO)

Because of it, this project needs to evolution into a 3D expanding shape to be perfectly satisfactory.

First, there is an attempt to stick the silver trays with different nods to make the structure. But this way isn’t possible because the trays cannot be structural.

So that for, it’s needed to come back to the first structure, where the main piece remains since it is and develop the joint pieces, allowing up growing.

The final evolution of the project, is to change the geometrical and crude pieces shapes into more fluid and aesthetic. Also, the final material will be changed from wood into smoked plexiglass, to get a better fusion between the silver trays and the structure to get a magic and wonderfull game of lights.

The final object has achied a really beautifull design perfectly melted with a functional structure.

Este proyecto es muy completo ya que cumple con prácticamente todos los requisitos:

  1. Un uso y emplazamiento urbano concreto (SÍ)
  2. Un uso razonado del material reciclado elegido (SÍ)
  3. Una sólida y geométrica estructura que se aguante por sí misma y no parta (SÍ)
  4. Una expansión tridimensonal (NO)

Debido a esto, este proyecto necesita una evolución hacia una forma de expansión tridimensional en el espacio, para ser perfectamente satisfactorio.

Primero, existe un intento de unión de las bandejas de aluminio con diferentes nodos para hacer la estructura. Pero este camino no es posible, ya que las bandejas no pueden ser estructurales.

Por esta razón, se vuelve a la primera estructura donde la pieza principal se queda tal como está y se desarrollan las piezas de junta, para que puedan permitir el crecimiento hacia arriba.

La evolución final del proyecto, es la de cambiar las geométricas y toscas formas de las piezas en unas más fluidas y estéticas. También, el material final se cambia, la estructura de madera pasará a ser de metacrilato ahumado para obtener una mejor fusión entre las bandejas de aluminio y la estructura consiguiendo un mágico y maravilloso juego de luces.

El objeto final ha alcanzado un diseño verdaderamente bonito, perfectamente mezclado con una estructura funcional.
